Our Story

Australian Art Gallery was founded in 1988 by Margaret and Robert Thornton, two passionate art collectors who saw the need for a dedicated space to showcase Australia's diverse artistic heritage. What began as a small exhibition space in a converted warehouse in Albert Park has grown into one of South Australia's most respected art institutions.

During the early 1990s, the gallery gained recognition for its pioneering approach to exhibiting Indigenous Australian art alongside contemporary works, creating meaningful dialogues between different artistic traditions. This innovative curatorial approach helped establish our reputation as forward-thinking advocates for Australian art in all its forms.

In 2005, the gallery underwent a major expansion, tripling its exhibition space and adding dedicated research facilities. Under the direction of current Gallery Director Emily Chen, who joined in 2010, we've strengthened our commitment to supporting emerging artists while continuing to celebrate established masters of Australian art.

Today, Australian Art Gallery proudly serves as a cultural bridge, connecting artists, collectors, and art enthusiasts from across Australia and around the world. Our collection now spans over 1,250 works, representing the rich tapestry of Australian artistic expression from traditional Aboriginal art to cutting-edge contemporary installations.
